What Is GMV on TikTok Shop? (Meaning and Formula)

GMV on TikTok Shop explained: what it means, the formula, why it is not your revenue, and how to read it without fooling yourself.

Mechanics3 min read

GMV on TikTok Shop is Gross Merchandise Value: the total amount customers pay at checkout across your shop, before any refunds, cancellations, platform fees, or creator commissions come out. It is the headline number TikTok, agencies, and tools all quote. It is also not your revenue, and treating it like revenue is the most common way sellers fool themselves.

Here is what the number means, how it is calculated, and how to read it honestly.

The formula

GMV is simple math:

GMV = number of orders × average order value

If 1,000 orders go through at an average of $30, your GMV is $30,000. That is the value of goods moved, full stop. It does not care what those sales cost you.

This gap is exactly why experienced sellers treat big headline numbers with suspicion. Threads full of operators openly debate whether TikTok Shop is worth it anymore, and a recurring theme is that the flashy GMV figures rarely survive contact with fees, refunds, and returns. Keep that skepticism when anyone quotes you a GMV number, including your own dashboard.

Why GMV is not revenue

The gap between GMV and what actually lands in your account is large and often ignored. Out of that headline number come:

  • Refunds and cancellations, which GMV does not subtract.
  • Platform and payment fees.
  • Creator commissions, typically 10% to 20% of the sale.
  • Your cost of goods and shipping.

Reporting GMV as revenue inflates the top line, by roughly 18% to 35% on average, according to analyses of TikTok Shop reporting (Dashboardly). When an agency or a competitor waves a giant GMV figure, remember it is the biggest, softest version of the number.

Why GMV still matters

Despite the caveats, GMV is the right north-star metric for a creator program, because it is the thing creators directly move. Your job with affiliates is to increase orders and order value. GMV captures both. Margin, fees, and returns are real, but they are managed downstream of the sales creators generate.

So use GMV to measure the program, and use net contribution to measure the business. Two different jobs.

What actually drives TikTok Shop GMV

GMV goes up when more creators post more shoppable content that converts. In practice:

  • More active creators. Affiliate GMV is heavily concentrated, so the work is finding and scaling the few who sell. See TikTok Shop affiliate benchmarks.
  • Better content. Native, hook-first videos convert; stiff ads do not.
  • Amplification. Turning winning organic videos into ads via GMV Max and Spark Ads extends reach beyond a creator's own followers.
  • Reviews and social proof. Getting past the early review count unlocks conversion on the listing itself.

How to read your GMV dashboard without lying to yourself

  • Track GMV and net together. Never quote one without knowing the other.
  • Watch GMV by creator. A handful will drive most of it; that is where to invest.
  • Separate organic vs ad-driven GMV so you know what is really working before you scale spend.
  • Compare against category benchmarks, not against a viral month.

The short version

GMV is the value of everything sold before costs. It is the correct way to measure a creator program and the wrong way to measure your bank balance. Read it with the deductions in mind and it becomes the most useful number you have.
